The crypto tax deadlines, counting down.
Crypto gains are reported through self assessment, so the dates below are your dates. They are verified against gov.uk and dated at the bottom of this page. The countdown runs in your browser against today's date, tells you which tax year each deadline belongs to, and drops the ones that are not yours.
The dates are the same for everyone. Answer these two and the list keeps only yours.
- Whether you are registered for self assessment
- Whether this is your first year filing
The countdown is computed on this page from your device's clock. Nothing is transmitted. The copy link carries your two answers in the fragment after the # symbol, which browsers never send to any server, ours included.
The same dates, in plain list form
5 October 2026 Register for self assessment if you need to file for 2025/26 and have not filed before.
31 October 2026 Paper returns for 2025/26 must reach HMRC by 11:59pm.
30 December 2026 Online deadline if you want HMRC to collect what you owe through your tax code.
31 January 2027 Online returns for 2025/26, and the tax itself, due by 11:59pm. The big one.
5 April 2027 The 2026/27 tax year ends, and with it the year’s £3,000 allowance, use it or lose it.
31 July 2027 Second payment on account for 2026/27, if payments on account apply to you.
The deadline that actually catches people
Not 31 January, but 5 October. First-time filers must register by then, and most people who bought crypto in a bull year discover self assessment exists sometime in December. If last year was your first year with disposals, registration is the deadline to move on now, it takes minutes and removes the scramble.
Why January is the wrong month to start
The return itself is quick once the numbers exist. What takes the time is reconciliation, gathering exports, pairing transfers, fixing gaps, and that work is identical in August and January, except August has no penalty clock running. The app is free under 1,000 transactions, computes every year at once, and its SA108 helper maps the figures straight to the return's boxes.
Common questions
When is the crypto tax deadline for 2025/26?
Crypto gains go on your self assessment return, online filing and payment are due by 11:59pm on 31 January 2027. Paper returns are due earlier, 31 October 2026.
I have never filed before, what is my first deadline?
Registration. Tell HMRC by 5 October 2026 that you need to file for 2025/26, the return and payment then follow the normal deadlines.
What happens if I miss 31 January?
A late filing penalty applies immediately and interest accrues on unpaid tax, with further penalties as time passes. Filing something correct late beats filing nothing, and computing the real numbers is the first step either way.
Do I need to file if my gains are under the allowance?
If your net gains are under £3,000 and you are not otherwise required to file, often not, but proceeds thresholds and other income can still trigger a return. Compute first, then decide, the app shows both figures.
Which tax year does each deadline belong to?
The autumn and January dates belong to the tax year that ended the previous 5 April, so in the autumn of 2026 they are the 2025/26 dates. The 5 April date and the payments on account belong to the tax year running now. The countdown on this page labels every date with its tax year for exactly this reason.
